Slide # 70 - Bronchiole

Medium magnification view of an area of the wall of a bronchiole. The characteristic features here are an epithelium that is reduced in complexity - simple columnar; very thin lamina propria beneath the epithelium, and a significant layer of smooth muscle (SM). There is no cartilage in the wall of bronchioles and this allows for easy differentiation from a bronchus.
